Flexible Rhythm Plans
Have you ever wondered why after many lazy unstructured days, you end up with little gremlin protégés running around your home?
Have you ever looked at the parents who are (let’s be honest) brave enough to home school and wondered why they are still smiling at their kids? (My kids would be running away from me crying if I home schooled, and I would look as if I had been homeless for months!!) Has the thought crossed your mind that school holidays are upon us, social distancing is becoming more than a trend word, and how the heck will you fit in working from home to keep your job while entertaining your tribe? Confession - all have been my thoughts at least once! “Routines are bad”. “I don’t want my kids to be structured in their daily routine”. “Living by a schedule is so limiting”. “I don’t want my kids to grow up like robots”. All this aside, as much as we hate to admit it: as humans we crave routine and structure. Our inbuilt circadian rhythm is so strong to want to wake and go to sleep at the same time each day. Our digestive system craves food at regular intervals, highlighting even further that while we may wish to live as free spirits, even our biological needs are governed by a routine of sorts. So as much as you think that a flexible routine is not for you, flexible rhythm is something that helps our minds and bodies alike. No matter how responsive you want to be to a baby’s every need, even their little bodies fall into a flexible rhythm of 3 hourly feeds (flexible is the key work here!!). Children tend to climb the walls when there is a lack of structure or routine. The fights and push back happens when they have no idea what is coming next. Even if the plan is a lazy Netflix binging morning in PJs, followed by toasted sandwiches for lunch; if they know this from the outset, they won’t bug you every five minutes with: “I’m bored”. “I’m hungry”. “What are we doing today?” “What’s for lunch?” The school day is set up with a similar structure or routine daily, which allows children to relax. Each morning as a class, they go through what’s on for the day. So come midway through maths time, they can look up and see the visual schedule and know that recess is after maths, then they can look at the countdown time on the interactive whiteboard and know there are only 3 minutes left. So get out the microwave timer or whatever you have on hand at the ready! Additionally, doing something in the same way each time helps us to learn the fundamentals of executive functioning: planning, sequencing, memory. There is a process and sequence to everything we do. And routines aside, if we don’t show and teach children the correct order and sequence to brush their teeth for example, leaving them to be without a routine; they could end up picking up their toothbrush and brushing randomly, missing teeth, then rinsing their mouth, then putting toothpaste on their brush, then shaking their brush off before putting it away. You think that’s a bit silly I bet, “of course I would teach my child that routine and sequence, there is an undeniable order to it for it to be effective.” Well it is the same for eating a meal, getting dressed, and driving a car. While you may not want the end outcome to be little robots in a production line, that very rhythm helps them to remember these fundamental skills to be functional in life. But I know as a time poor parent myself, that coming up with any kind of daily structure is beyond a fleeting thought. So much to do, and no time to sit and go through a routine with the kids each morning, let alone conceptualise it! Yet at 10 am when World War III is breaking out in the lounge room as you try to login to a work call, or just have a 5 minute breather while the baby is asleep- you will be wishing Mary Poppins would knock on your door and save you. Well here is a step towards having her! A Paediatric Occupational Therapist coming to your home via PDF and social media feeds as your answer. I’ve taken all the planning out of it for you! Each day you can print off the PDF for the day’s ‘Flexible Rhythm’, pop it in a spot where everyone can see it and during breakfast you can run through the day with the kids. Maybe don’t tell them all the details coz that would be information overload!! You can add (or not) in the rough times for those that need more structure (children with ASD or ADHD or ODD). And each day has a carefully planned evidence-based rhythm to follow, that will ensure your little one has what they need to feel safe, know what is coming next and to help develop their:
Each day is a carefully prepared balance to:
On top of all of these things, this program will build into helping shift the tone in your home to a more positive one. And you don’t have to add anything (unless you want to) and unless your children need more activities. Too good to be true? Well the FREE downloadable PDF is a little sneak peak at the pack available. 15 days that are planned from when they wake to when they sleep…that’s three weeks of weekdays covered. And I like to encourage that on the weekends you do family activities and outings (as social distancing allows). While I know some of you may think - I’ll band together with my girl friends and we can all chip in a few bucks and share one download, if like you to consider that this is what feeds my family. And when you support small local businesses, you are helping to put food on the table for our families and perhaps even contributing towards ballet lessons or soccer registration. I would love nothing more than to help out those who are not in a financial position to feed their families due to financial strain. So if this is you, there is no need to be embarrassed, please send me a direct email ([email protected]) to let me know you are in this position, and I would LOVE to gift this pack to you. If I can take one stress off your plate it would be a privilege to help you in this way. Enjoy! xo PS. *Purchase of this product is for personal use only and is subject to copyright.
